DeLand High Honors 10 Athletes on National Signing Day

Ten Bulldogs signed their letters of intent to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level. Quinn Dawson - Yale University (Football), Tessa Colden – Webber (Volleyball), Abigail Bradley –Webber (Beach Volleyball), Ben Rowdon – Lake Sumter State (Baseball), Garret Capman – Embry Riddle (Baseball), David McLeod W. Virginia Wesleyan (Baseball), Kasey & Kendra Trickey – Miami Dade (Softball), Kayla Washington -  Indian River State (Softball), Tyler Frost – Wartburg College (Soccer), & Ruben Mohrain – Stony Brook (Tennis).

 

Quinn Dawson will be going off to Yale next fall to continue his education and athletic careers. Quinn is a member of The National Honor Society and maintains a GPA of 4.53, ranking him in the top 12 of the 2016 graduating class. Throughout Quinn’s career at DeLand he has been awarded numerous awards on the field. To name a few he has lettered 3 years in football and one in Weightlifting, Athlete of the Month, All Area Team, & Volusia County Player of the Week. Quinn has also played Basketball and Soccer as a Bulldog. We wish Quinn the best Yale as he plans to major in Economics.

 

Webber International University drew the attention of two Lady Bulldog Volleyball Players. The first, Tessa Colden will be playing Volleyball and Beach Volley ball next year for the Warriors. Tessa is ranked in the top 20 of her senior class with a 4.42 GPA. Tessa has lettered in Volleyball all four years at DeLand along with many awards. In her Junior year she was names as AVCA 8A player of the year as well as 1st team all-district her Senior Year. We wish Tessa the best as she looks to pursue a degree in Finance and Business.

Lady Bulldog Abigail Bradley will be attending Webber in the fall as well. She will be playing for the Warriors on the Beach Volleyball court. Abigail is a member of the National Honor Society with a GPA of 4.18. Abigail has gotten a head start on her college career while being dual enrolled at Daytona State in her pursuit of a Finance degree.

 

Ben Rowdon, a Fellowship of Christian Athletes member, will be attending Lake Sumter College in Leesburg, Florida. Ben has maintained a 4.0 GPA while lettering in Baseball all 4 years while a DeLand High. Ben has proven his commitment to the community as well with his fellow teammates in going to local elementary schools and reading and mentoring future Bulldogs. Ben is planning to major in Social Sciences while at Lake Sumter.

 

Garrett Capman will being staying a little closer to home next fall. Garret will be in Daytona at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, where he plans to study Aviation or Homeland Security. Garrett, along with his fellow teammates have committed to help the DeLand area by helping keep local roadways free of litter.

 

David McLeod is our third Senior to continue his athletic career at the next level in Baseball. David will be traveling to West Virginia to attend WV Wesleyan College where he plans to major in chemistry and minor in biology in preparation for becoming a pharmacist.  David has earned a 4.0 GPA while working on his international baccalaureate diploma and member of the National Honor Society while at DHS. David has done numerous volunteering projects with his fellow teammates as well. He has served as a mentor to youth baseball players in the community and a member of the iBuild Academy.

 
 

Kasey Trickey is a Scholar-Athlete at DeLand with a 3.64 GPA. Kasey has lettered in Softball all four years at DHS, as well as 2 years for Volleyball. She is a member of Athletic Leadership as well as garnering an honorable mention in the News-Journal’s all area team in 2015. In Kasey’s 4 years at DeLand she has earned over 75 volunteer hours at DHS Summer Softball Camps. Kasey will be taking her talents south and attending Miami Dade College, where she plans to major in Biology.

Kasey will not be heading south alone. Her twin sister Kendra Trickey will be joining her sister as a Lady Shark down at Miami Dade. Kendra is a Scholar-Athlete as well with a GPA of 3.15. Lettering in softball for two years, she has also earned MVP accolades on JV her Freshman and Sophomore years. Kendra is also an avid volunteer, not only at the DHS Summer Softball Camps, but also helping to prepare care packages for folks overseas. Kendra is planning on using her time at Miami Dade to become a nurse.

 

Kayla Washington will be attending Indian River College in Fort Pierce this fall. Kayla will be playing softball for the Pioneers, but she has had success in weightlifting as well. She has lettered in Softball for the past 3 years and all 4 years in weightlifting. She has placed 2nd twice at the 5-Star conference Weightlifting Meets, and in the 2015 Regional meet. This year and last year she will represent DeLand at the state championships. Kayla is very involved here on campus with Athletic Leadership, Juniorettes, FCA, SGA and Renaissance.

 

Soccer player Tyler Frost has lettered all four years here at DeLand, and will be headed to Iowa to play for the Wartburg College as a Knight. Tyler has been a member of Athletic Leadership and National Honor Society with a GPA of 3.92. Tyler has scored 28 goals in his high school career. 11 of those came his Junior year leading the team. Tyler was a huge factor this year, helping the Bulldogs reach their first District final in 33 year. We wish Tyler the best as he looks to study Neuroscience while at Wartbug.

 

Ruben Morhain, scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.86, will be attending Stony Brook College in New York. Ruben has volunteered with Pop Warner Football teams and youth tennis programs while at DeLand. Ruben was the team MVP his Sophomore year, and placed 2nd at Districts in 2015. Ruben plans to study Chemical and Molecular Engineering while at Stony Brook.
