Coach Vernon Shelton Named as Varsity Football Head Coach

Deland High School is pleased to announce that Vernon Shelton will be the new head varsity football coach for the Bulldogs.   Vernon had been the interim head football coach at the end of this season with the resignation of Coach James Thomson in October.

Coach Shelton has had playing experience at the high school and college levels. He played high school football at P.K. Young High School in Gainesville.  He also played his college ball in Gainesville at the University of Florida.  He was a member of the 2006 SEC and National Championship team and earned all SEC Academic Honors. 

Coach Shelton’s coaching experience includes coaching running backs at his alma mater, P.K. Yonge High School from 2008-2011.  He also coach offensive and defensive line at Gainesville High School during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.  Vernon was the defensive coordinator for the Deland Bulldogs for the past 3 seasons until being named interim Head Coach in October.

Coach Shelton brings a wealth of knowledge from his playing and coaching experiences.  His strong work ethic and passion for helping student-athletes find success on the field and in the classroom will be an asset to the Deland High School Community.
